It’s official! On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, while many around the world were celebrating the Earth (not sure how that came about), there was a quiet celebration going on in front of computers, tablets and smart phones all around North America, Australia and New Zealand. This celebration wasn’t for earth day, but instead it was because people visiting their favorite hunting and shooting websites, saw the headline, New Ruger 77/17 – 17WSM Bolt Action Rifle Announced! Okay, maybe it was just this website that had that text, but it was enough to cause a slight giddiness around the web for shooters and hunters who were waiting for another major manufacturer to join the .17WSM bandwagon. Ruger posted up the announcement on their main page, with a link to a page that includes all the specs (click here for the Ruger 77/17 – 17WSM page).
We already gave some information on the new Ruger, when we reported on the prototype at the 2015 SHOT Show this past January. Now that it has been officially announced, we know the exact specs of the rifle that will be produced. Ruger lists the following major specifications:
- Stock – American Walnut
- Barrel – 24″
- Magazine Capacity – 6
- Twist – 1:9″
- Finish – Matte Stainless
- Weight – 7.50 lbs.
This rifle is almost exactly like the version shown at the SHOT Show, except for the American Walnut stock. A few more details, include the overall length of 43.25″ and length of pull of 13.50″. This rifle also includes the patented rotary magazine we are all used to seeing in our Ruger rifles. The MSRP listed on the Ruger website, is $999.00. Although that may seem high, chances are pretty good that the price will settle at around the $700 to $730 range.
