The buzz last week in Las Vegas was that a new Ruger 17 WSM debuted at the 2015 SHOT Show. Ruger had one of their 77/17 rifles chambered for the 17 Winchester Super Magnum cartridge at the SHOT Show Media Range Day for members of the media to shoot at the range. After loading the magazine and shooting it, we believe Ruger has a winner on their hands, if priced right for the rimfire market. As the photographs show, this rifle was sitting in their familiar laminate stock, with a powdered stainless barreled action. Shots were taken out to 100 yards and, although it was not at a traditional dot target, we were able to use a spot on a metal target plate as our target and it did very well. Obviously, having this rifle at the bench, with a familiar rest and optics will determine it’s full potential, but we feel it will be a great combo and excellent for varmint hunters that shoot from the bench, off sticks, or in the field off a knee.
We are hoping to get access to one of the new Ruger 77/17 Rifles chambered in 17WSM as soon as possible, but the next announcement coming from Ruger will be at the 2015 NRA Show in Nashville, TN this April.
